Placement School: Dr. R. E. McKechnie Elementary School
Grade: 5

Pre-practicum Experience
September 26, 2006 to November 21, 2006

During the fall practicum I spent Tuesdays in the grade 5 classroom at McKechnie Elementary. I also spent one period each Tuesday with the grade 5/6 class while they had French.

I had the opportunity to begin to get to know the students that I will be spending the year with. I was introduced to several parents through a bannoch making activity and parent-teacher conferences. I worked with my sponsor teacher for all classes except for French when I worked with the teacher-librarian instead. This gave me the opportunity to observe different teaching styles and view different classroom management methods.

Summary of Experience:

Observed a variety of lessons and activities taught by several teachers
Assisted students with classroom work
Worked with parents and students during a cooking activity
Observed several parent-teacher conferences
Taught a French mini lesson on feelings to both classes
Taught a French mini lesson on the weather to both classes
Taught a Language Arts lesson on singular and plural nouns
Lead a journal writing class on "What Makes a Great Teacher" and wrote comments back to the students

Orientation School Experience
January 8, 2007 to January 19, 2007

During the short practicum, I enjoyed learning more about the students and how they interact with each other in class. I was fortunate to be able to go on several field trips with the class and parents, including the Police Museum, the Courthouse and skating!

Summary of Experience:

Created and taught a mini unit on food preferences in French to two classes
Taught two Art lessons based on Andy Warhol's Endangered Species paintings
Created a hallway display using the students' artwork
Taught two P.E. games classes
Taught several Computers and Language Arts classes
Helped students in a variety of field trip activities and lead a group around the Courthouses
Assisted students with classroom work and other activities
