February is full of cultural celebrations for Second Language learners. February 9th marks Mardi Gras in the Christian calendar, the day before the beginning of Lent; a period where one is shriven. Mardi Gras is also known as Shrove Tuesday. Due to this lengthy period of spiritual and physical purification, in olden times, one would use up all the lard in the home before it would go bad (pre-refrigeration days).
