The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages has been authorized by the Senate to examine the challenges of access to French schools and French Immersion programs in British Columbia. These meetings will take place in Vancouver and Victoria the week of October 3 to 7, 2016, with public hearings in Vancouver on October 4th and 5th. They will provide a forum for various stakeholder groups representing teachers and students in schools where French is taught in British Columbia. Speakers will highlight key issues in the delivery and sustainability of French programmes as well as offer recommendations to the Senate Committee. to review.
BCATML's French Language Representative, Trish Kolber, and President, Rome Lavrencic, have collaborated together to prepare a presentation to the Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages on October 5th. Additional presentations will be made by other stakeholder groups including the Conseil Scolaire Francophone de la Colombie-Britannique, the BC Francophone Parents' Federation, Canadian Parents for French (multiple local chapters), Faculties of Education (Collège Éducacentre, SFU, UBC), and finally student presentations by the Conseil jeunesse francophone de la Colombie-Britannique.
