This workshop will present 10 social movements linked to creative works in student-directed lessons. We will also share our other ideas for teaching social justice in Spanish.

The Japan Foundation Toronto and Alberta Education are in the process of developing a web-based information kit for promoting Japanese language education at the K-12 level in Canadian schools. The kit will have contents similar to the one developed by the Japan Foundation LA, and will include sections such as: "Start-up & Maintenance Guide for Japanese Language Programs," "Japanese Teachers’ Guide to Advocacy," "Administrators’ Guide to Japanese Language Program Advocacy, and "Parents’ Guide to Helping Their Children & Japanese Program Succeed." The trial version will be published in early September 2007. Curriculum Services Canada (CSC) has approved the resources and recommends them for elementary and secondary students in Core, Extended, Immersion and Intensive Core French.

This session is geared for Spanish teachers wishing to teach a unit on Latinos. We will explore aspects of relevance between Latinos as an unique cultural phenomenon and our intercultural student population. First, the session will focus on classroom activities that introduce Latino culture. Second, there will be an introduction to the presence of Latino culture in Canada such as Spanish language radio, newspapers, etc. Third, the session will centre on the intercultural aspect of Latino identity and its effect on students of multicultural origins. Finally, there will be an orientation to the social and political issues attached to Latinos, such as immigration, racism and representations of Latinos in mainstream culture.
