BCATML Greetings Calendar 2022
|
Greetings are one way in which different cultures and peoples share commonalities and differences. They can be something unique to a group of people, or they can be something shared between cultures such as the handshake, fist bump or other gesture. Greetings can also vary in form and/or manner within a particular language group based on the customs, traditions, and history of a specific region such as the ever-confounding number of kisses different cities in France use when they do la bise! Even native speakers of a region can get confounded by the complexities and customs.
BCATML decided to help demystify such quandaries for you and your students with the publication of our Greetings Calendar for 2022. What better way to engage our young learners with simple forms of greetings, gestures, and phrases which can be used when greetings peers and adults alike! We are excited to share some of our suggestions and ideas for both teachers and students to try in class or at home with their families. This is our fifth annual calendar, and we couldn’t be prouder. Viewers will note that we used manga characters to depict different cultural greetings to better illustrate intercultural connections. Calendars were mailed at the start of 2022 to all current BCATML members to hang up in their classroom and to use as discussion points with their students. We encourage all teachers to use this resource to help develop students explore intercultural understanding and awareness. Teachers can also download their copy using the link below the image. BCATML Recipe Calendar 2021
Foods and dishes are easily one of the most defining aspects of different cultural groups and societies. Often they have a historical or spiritual significance and several dishes have their own variations from one culture to the next (for example: pancakes).
It therefore became obvious that this year's BCATML Cultural Calendar should involve food! What better way to nourish your soul and your love for teaching and learning languages than a recipe calendar? We are excited to share this year's theme of cultural recipes which teachers and students can try out together in class or at home with their families. This is our fourth annual calendar and is a true labour of love with the entire Executive contributing to its creation. All calendars were delivered to active BCATML members at the start of 2021 for them to hang up in their classrooms and use as talking points with their students. It is our hope that this resource will help develop your students' intercultural competencies and awareness! Let us know what you think of this year's calendar. Email us at psac51@bctf.ca.

BCATML Olympic Calendar 2020
With the 2020 Olympic Games taking place in Tokyo, Japan this summer, BCATML decided fuse west with east through anime art. We hope this calendar will incite your students to talk about the cultural impact the Tokyo Games will have on the world.
Many different ethnicities, cultures, and athletes are represented using anime, a Japanese art form which is well known amongst teenagers today. Thanks to highly creative and talented artists at www.world-flags.org, anime lovers around the world can see their country, flag, and traditional dress depicted in anime style. Beside each anime figure is a blue sphere showing a kanji character representing the country depicted with the intention to encourage conversation about the different scripts that exist in the world, as not all languages use the Roman alphabet. As well, each anime figure is dressed in traditional colours with regalia representing the country of origin. Perhaps this may spark conversations about the symbols used by the artist? |
To not only spotlight the language groups that BCATML represents, but also to interest and inspire you and your students, we selected unique Olympic and Paralympic athletes and highlighted some of their impressive achievements. We also showcase each depicted country’s involvement with hosting or bidding for the Olympic Games. The Games are not without controversy, and this may provide a meaningful point for group discussion. Like our 2019 Monumental Calendar, this calendar lists important feast days, celebrations, and festivals celebrated around the world. It is our gift to thank you for coming back to BCATML and trusting us to lead you in your provincial professional development day. We hope you enjoy the beauty of this calendar as much as we loved creating it.

BCATML Monumental Calendar 2019
BCATML's MONUMENTal Calendar 2019 was our second calendar. Teachers and students will find once again statutory holidays, cultural celebrations and feast days for the year. However, to keep the calendar less cluttered-looking, we removed the countries' independence days in order to create more room for teachers to write other important dates; such as students' birthdays, local events, etc.
Instead of highlighting the cultural contributions from French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Punjabi, and Spanish speaking cultures, we decided to encourage students to travel to foreign destinations by showcasing various monuments of historical and/or cultural importance to that particular language group. Students will learn the monument's historical significance as well as the role it currently holds for its people.

BCATML Cultural Calendar 2018
BCATML's Cultural Calendar 2018 was our inaugural calendar. Teachers and students will find statutory holidays, cultural celebrations and feast days, as well as independence days for many countries.
The unique feature about this calendar is that BCATML's Language Representatives showcased cultural contributions, innovations, milestones, inventions, creative works, economic advantages, career opportunities, study-abroad opportunities, as well as well-known speakers of a particular language. We applied this format to contributions from French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Punjabi, and Spanish.
