Conference 2022 keynote - Trevor Mackenzie
Trevor will be speaking about his work in supporting schools in implementing inquiry, how to scaffold for student agency, and what strong inquiry schools do to build a culture of inquiry both for students and for teachers. Trevor will share structures to cultivate curiosity and engage learners as partners in designing the learning experience. Those in attendance will experience inquiry with Trevor. You will engage in thinking routines, reflective conversations around student-centred assessment, and explore resources that you can bring back to your school and your context no matter your role and position. One of Trevor's inquiry values is that inquiry-based learning is not merely something our students engage in. Strong cultures of inquiry nurture the conditions for all stakeholders to engage in curiosity, wonder, and inquiry whether you are a classroom teacher, coordinator, or administrator. The time with Trevor will transcend context yet leverage personal relevance and meaning for each of you.

Glenn Cake: The 3 E's of 21st Century Teaching:
Education through entertainment (“Edutainment”) involves learners participating in digital activities such as games under the supervision of their teachers. Edutainment is being extensively researched in an effort to develop effective student-centered pedagogies using emerging technologies. Empirical studies have demonstrated that digital games effectively promote language learning (Hui Zhang, 2018).
Researchers have argued that through language, learners can benefit significantly from game-playing as it can promote constructive, situated, and experiential learning (Squire 2008; Woo, 2014). However, significant work i s still required to provide clear answers with respect to innovative and effective learning practices for digital games.
In order to do this work, teachers and researchers need to be aware of the possibilities. A variety of free edutainment tools and websites are available online. In this hands-on, interactive session, Glenn will take the group through a number of activities. This presentation will interest teachers, educational leaders and researchers exploring the use digital games for learning.

Conference 2020: Celebrating Languages Without Borders
Celebrating Languages Without Borders 2020 was a jointly held conference on October 23 & 24, between the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT) and the BCATML. The conference was unique in that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was held virtually (a first for both Associations).
Over 700 participants, exhibitors, government representatives, and facilitators attended the event from coast to coast to coast, the USA, Europe, and Asia. The promotional video was first revealed at CASLT's Annual General Meeting & Networking Day event and then subsequently "blew up" the internet. The successful conference lived up to its name as Celebrating Languages Without Borders. The promotional video was entirely created by Rome Lavrencic who co-chaired the conference with Kindra Harte. |

Evolving Inclusive Practices for the (digital) Language Classroom (Keynote presentation):
“Evolution” is both a descriptor and a process. With attention to the idea of teaching as an “evolving” practice, and a practice in which we help others “evolve,” this interactive keynote invites participants to explore ways to hone and expand our inclusive practices within the language classroom. Further, we’ll consider policy, research, theory, teaching tools, and teaching philosophies as they intersect with the idea of what it means to foster proficiency in a classroom in accessible, relevant ways for all students. Participants are invited to use the Nearpod app to engage with the presentation as it happens.

Leadership in Support of Inclusive Language Education:
This workshop is for anyone who currently holds a leadership position — whether grade-level, school-level, or district-level — or is thinking about making a transition into a leadership role. Drawing on research about leadership that has effectively supported both inclusive practices and second language learning, we’ll collaborate to co-construct some clear action paths for deploying your leadership skills to support/facilitate more inclusivity within your sphere of influence. |

Luisa Canuto is the Italian Language Program Director at the French, Hispanic and Italian Studies Department at UBC and has been teaching language courses since 1994. Her research interests include the use of educational technologies in the classroom, the impact of service learning on students’ linguistic and metacognitive development and curriculum program renewal and development. Previous roles included the coordination of the Italian Program for UBC Continuing Studies and Manager of Faculty Program for UBC's Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology.
Creating an Environment for Deeper Online Learning - Building and Maintaining Community and Social Presence:
Positive social interactions among learners are key to developing their cognitive, metacognitive, and language skills. As both research and experience have shown, engaging learning activities — such as discussions, annotations of documents or videos, group tasks, and collaborative projects — help students to articulate their own cognitive process, build knowledge, and challenge and support each other’s ideas. Through an interactive mix of content delivery, guided reflection, and experiential techniques, participants will be introduced to some broad concepts and discuss ways of developing a mix of real-time, synchronous teaching activities and asynchronous course material that students can complete at their own pace. Participants will have an opportunity to collaborate with peers in small breakout groups to brainstorm viable experiential activities and develop their understanding of effective approaches to enhance teaching presence and support active learning in the online environment. |
