The Ministry of Education has finally released the revised Core French curriculum online! The Ministry has also made additional modifications to the functionality of the website. One feature that teachers will likely find useful is the single click option to have each grade exported into a Word or PDF document along with the online elaborations.

Teachers can expect to see instructional samples uploaded over the summer months now that copyright ownership of teachers' instructional samples have been agreed upon by both the BCTF and the Ministry of Education.

The BC Teachers' Federation closed its call today to select 16 representatives in order to begin work on re-writing the curriculum for American Sign Language, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Punjabi and Spanish as second languages.

BCTF invited BCATML to help nominate candidate representatives to the second languages curriculum team. The BCTF will appoint a total of 16 active BCTF members to the curriculum team; 2 representatives for each language. Where possible, a candidate was selected to represent the elementary voice and another candidate for secondary. It is expected, the Ministry will select representatives from independent schools as well as members from administration to assist. Work is slated to begin over the summer months, or early fall.

French Summer Institutes at UBC
July 4-21, 2016

*NEW Bursary Information *

Our interactive summer institutes focus on the practical application of French through conversation and cultural experiences in a supportive, small group environment. Both three-week and one-week programs are available.

For more information regarding our French Summer Institutes, please visit our website.

We are pleased to announce that bursaries for our French Summer Institutes are now administered directly by UBC Continuing Studies on behalf of the French Education Branch of the BC Ministry of Education. This means that you will no longer need to pay the full tuition amount in advance and apply separately to the ministry.

To be eligible, applicants must have a valid BC Teaching Certificate or Letter of Permission to teach from the Teacher Regulation Branch. Non-certified teachers from independent schools classified under Group 3 may provide a letter from the school administration confirming their employment instead. Current employment with a BC school district is NOT required.

If funds are remaining after June 24, bursaries will be offered to employees of BC school districts who are not certified teachers, but who have regular contact with students in French programs.

Funding is available for both the three-week and one-week programs.

There is lots of funding still available, so if you or anyone you know is interested in improving their French this summer, apply now.

For more details about the bursaries and to apply please visit our bursary information page.

A Mandarin class in UBC's Continuing Studies' program.
As 18-year-old Bryce Balanuik stood onstage at the Chinese consulate in Vancouver last month, his nerves were evident as he looked down repeatedly at the speech he had prepared and memorized well before the event. But when it came to what drove him to learn Chinese, his storytelling — in Mandarin, no less — was clear: "Next year, I'll be going off to university. I want to go into business and do business with China. [Speaking the language] brings me happiness, and it allows me to meet friends and be more successful in my career."
