Dear BC Modern Language Teachers, I’m writing to extend an invitation to our upcoming Global Education Symposium which we are holding in partnership with the Educational Leadership and Management Program at UBC. Lorraine Richards of Ontario facilitated at last year's BCATML conference, and she is one of the founding teachers behind Projet à Québec in the Ontario Modern Language Teachers' Association. Lorraine will be presenting a session at our Symposium, on connecting language and culture for the global citizen. This is a free one day professional learning opportunity designed for educators who share a common goal of helping to engage and prepare students to become successful citizens of the world.

There are new scholarships available for Canadian Spanish teachers. The course will be held in Salamanca (Spain) from July 18 to 22. There are two attachments, one of them with details of the course and the other one with an application for those teachers who are interested.
They cover registration, tuition fees and accommodation (full board). The teachers would only have to defray the cost of their airline tickets from Canada to Spain as well as transport from the airport to Salamanca.
The deadline for submission is May 18. All applications should be forwarded to Maria Espejo (email@example.com) by that that date.
These scholarships are granted on a yearly basis and all the teachers who have attended have always provided some excellent feedback on them in terms of the quality of the course.

On April 18th, Ministry of Education Curriculum Coordinator for Core French, Laura Hawkes, presented updates to the Core French redesigned curriculum at Surrey School District's Curriculum Implementation Day. At that workshop, the Ministry also revealed its plans to begin work on the curriculum redesign for other second languages, specifically ASL, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Punjabi and Spanish. Below are two slides shared during Laura Hawkes' presentation. As more information becomes known, BCATML will post updates pertaining to the redesign of the other second languages on our website.
